What is sedation dentistry?
Sedation dentistry involves the use of medication to help patients relax during dental treatments. Although sedation dentistry is typically for patients with a fear of the dentist, it can be used for patients who:

- Cannot tolerate pain
- Have very sensitive teeth
- Need significant dental work
Dr. Carrington offers minimal anxiolysis sedations. Nitrous oxide is a colorless, odorless gas to relax patients. The medication takes effect immediately and is controlled throughout the procedure. Once the procedure is over, the sedative is stopped and 100% oxygen is given to help remove the nitrous oxide from the lungs. The patient can resume normal activity.
For patients with higher levels of anxiety, oral medication or a combination of medications can be used. The prescribed pills are taken prior to the procedure and are effective after about an hour. Because the drowsy effects linger after the procedure is over, a driver and someone to help with post-operative care are needed.
